Review by Damien Crisp

Symphony No 1 A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams is an exceptional piece of music that showcases the composer's mastery of orchestration and choral writing. The album features four movements that are inspired by the sea and its many moods.

The first movement, "A Song for All Seas, All Ships," is a grand and majestic opening that sets the tone for the entire piece. The second movement, "On the Beach at Night Alone," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that captures the tranquility and mystery of the sea at night.

The third movement, "The Waves," is a powerful and dynamic piece that builds to a climactic finale. The final movement, "The Explorers," is a triumphant and uplifting piece that celebrates the spirit of exploration and discovery.

The performances on this album are outstanding, with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus delivering a stunning rendition of Vaughan Williams' work. The soloists, soprano Elizabeth Gale and baritone John Shirley-Quirk, are also excellent, bringing a depth of emotion to their performances.

Boult is the best, forever and ever!

Wondrous music making... thank you J S for posting
Haitink et al, are good, really good, but Boult here is just a little clearer and gets a little more music out of this titanic work. Sheila Armstrong has superb control of the melodic line.

Wow. Heart-breaking. Awesome.
My favorite version, the one I first heard years ago. Soloists are outstanding and the chorus as well.
Love is giving, everything. That is what I feel from Boult and his fellow musicians when they perform Vaughan Williams. This is the only version that brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this., Jean Sébastien Mazzarino.
