Review by Valeska van Vliet

Ule Troxler's album "SABLOphon" is a mesmerizing collection of deeply atmospheric tracks that showcase the Swiss musician's exceptional talent for crafting intricate, textural soundscapes. From the haunting, ethereal opening track "SABLO" to the pulsating, rhythmically complex "Ombra", each piece on this album is a masterclass in sonic storytelling.

Troxler's use of electronic and acoustic instruments is seamless, with lush synthesizer pads and intricate percussion blending seamlessly with organic sounds like guitar and piano. The result is a rich, immersive listening experience that rewards repeated listens.

Standout tracks include "Eclat", with its hypnotic arpeggios and haunting vocal samples, and the epic closer "Karma", which builds to a stunning crescendo of soaring synths and driving beats.

Notes

  • SABLOphonie durch 8 Räume - SABLOphony across 8 rooms - SABLOphonie par 8 espaces - SABLOfonia attraverso 8 spazi.
  • The first version of the Sablophon (sable = sand, phon = voice) was built in1980 by Wolfgang Rehn. It was a mechanical instrument, which could produce sounds and tones up to 4.5 octaves using sand falling on strings. Unfortunately the first version of the instrument does not exist any longer. Remaining however are audio recordings from the 1980s.
  • Tracks 1 through 8 are composed and processed on a computer using the sounds of the Sablophon. Track 9 is the sound of the Sablophon without processing.
