The self-titled album Stanley Clarke by Stanley Clarke was released in 1974 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz fusion albums of all time. The album features a range of styles from funk to jazz to rock and showcases Clarke's incredible bass playing skills.

The opening track, "Vulcan Princess," is a funky, uptempo number that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track features Clarke's signature slap bass technique and is a showcase for his virtuosity. Other standout tracks include "Yesterday Princess," a beautiful ballad that showcases Clarke's melodic sensibilities and "Spanish Phases for Strings and Bass," a Latin-infused track that features Clarke's bass playing alongside a string section.

The album also features a number of guest musicians, including guitarists Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin, who add their own unique styles to the mix.

This is a truly stunning record. After the busy years of Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Lifetime, these four masters combined for a once-in-a-lifetime display of musical mastery. Lopsy Lu is probably my favorite, a circular jam that builds and builds until it grooves to a fade-out. Tony Williams' deconstructed shuffle is a classic of hip drumming and would fit right in with something you'd hear from Chris Dave. As always, Clarke's sheer joy shines through all the compositions.
