What an awesome performance, in many ways its like hearing this work for the first time. great sound too.
RIP Van Cliburn. Great pianist in every way, still, for those who might not yet know the Sviatoslav Richter and Stan Wislocki with the Warsaw Philharmonic, 1960 Deutsche Grammophon recording: do yourself a favour and check it out.

Van's tactile sensitivity was always just a little more fluid, discriminate and articulated than everyone else's versions of pretty much everything the Texan ever attempted. The individual quarters, eighths and sixteenths come right thru as distinct and modulated in a manner I have yet to run into elsewhere in YouTube's easily facilitated comparisons. Every one of the "good ones" hit all the notes, but this guy hit every single one with a consciously administered grace and finesse that continues to be The Paragon after six decades.

I feel Anna Federova does a terrific interpretation of this remarkable piece as well.
I've listened to this piece from dozens of world-class performers over the last four decades, and this is still the best of all of them. Like so many of Cliburn performances, this is just on a level all its own. Execution is flawless, the precision simply perfect, and the dynamics on full display for maximum emotional indulgence. It is hard to believe someone can play with such perfection, and still with such feeling, yet Cliburn pulls it off with routine brilliance.
Even Rachmaninoff was not able to play it so heartfully.

The recordings made under Reiner's leadership with the CSO and Szell's in Cleveland are truly amazing. The detailed quality of sound is extraordinary for the period of the 1950s and 1960s. They continue to hold up as master works, even against the digital technology used today in recording studios. Amazing!!!

I used to play this record more than a hundred times. But I haven't listened to this Cliburn performance for a long time since my family gave it away. Thank you very much! I am so glad to listen to his play again.
