In 1978, the group was formed from two school bands. Their entry into the GDR rock scene productions was successful in 1981. Musically, it was very much on the New Wave / funk-oriented and later developed to straight-line rock music. Their lyrics were strongly based on the time and music feeling of the former GDR youth and were therefore very well received there. The first ones met with so much popularity that in 1983 both the first single and the first LP called Bonbons und Schokolade appeared on Amiga. "Disko in der U-Bahn" of this LP was according to musicologist Michael Rauhut the first German hip-hop song. The 1985 album Alles klar? also included some more successful songs. On the 1988 published LP "I.L.D." the band presented themselves musically mature. In the same year Rockhaus was named Band of the Year. The title song Ich liebe Dich became the number one hit in the GDR year chart parade in 1988. In 1989, the song Mich zu lieben - also from the I.L.D. album - also made it to the hit parade top.
After the fall of the band produced two albums, of which Gnadenlose Träume was quite successful. From autumn 1994 to 1996 Acki Noack was singer of Rockhaus. In 1998, the band finally broke up because of internal difficulties. Mike Kilian, the singer of the group, continued to work as a solo artist. In 2005 the band "Die Prinzen" was looking for a support band for their tour. Tobias Künzel persuaded the band to make a comeback. Rockhaus toured as support act for "Die Prinzen". The success of the tour aroused the desire of the band to be back together on stage. In 2006, they went on their own East German tour, where the group was met with good public response. During this tour Rockhaus produced a live DVD, which appeared in 2009 under the name "Rockhaus Danke. In 2006, the LP I.L.D. remastered and released as a CD. Jürgen Ehle von Pankow, Uwe Haßbecker and Rüdiger Barton von Silly contributed as guest musicians. Petereit and Mohren produced this LP together with Jürgen Ehle. In 2009, the CD Positiv appeared and then they went on tour. In 2010, the DVD edition Ost-Rock Klassik was released, on which numerous "Eastern bands" such as Karat, Pankow, Eisbrenner, Electra, Silly, Renft, City and Puhdys appeared together with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg. On this live DVD, which was recorded on September 11, 2010 in the Berlin Kindl-Bühne Wuhlheide, Rockhaus is represented with Mich zu lieben, Bleib cool und I.L.D.. In the booklet Ingo York is mentioned under his former name Ingo Griese as a co-composer. In early 2011, Rockhaus began producing its new album Treibstoff. This album was recorded in the studio of Rainer Oleak, which they could also sign as producer of the CD. Fuel appeared on 3 February 2012, at the same time the band went on a tour in 17 East German cities.
On November 22, 2016, the band announced that Mohren was seriously ill; on the 31st of January 2017 Mohren died. Mike Kilian plays in addition to his occupation as a singer of Rockhaus, among other things, still in its own Rolling Stones coverband Starfucker. In addition, he produced several solo albums. He was also involved in the GDR group Gitarreros, in which he participated alongside Herbert Dreilich (Karat), Tamara Danz (Silly) and Toni Krahl (City) as a singer.
