Review by Brad Cornelia

Micaela Tobin's album A Vast Room is a stunning collection of experimental vocal compositions that showcase her incredible talent and creativity. From the haunting opening track "A Vast Room" to the dreamy and ethereal "Beneath the Surface," Tobin's voice is the star of the show, weaving intricate melodies and textures that draw the listener in and keep them captivated.

The album is a masterclass in vocal technique and manipulation, as Tobin uses a wide range of extended techniques, including throat singing, overtone singing, and electronic processing, to create a rich and diverse sonic landscape. The result is a mesmerizing and otherworldly sound that is both challenging and deeply rewarding.

Despite the avant-garde nature of the music, there is a strong emotional core to the album, with Tobin's vocals conveying a sense of vulnerability and introspection that is both powerful and poignant. The sparse instrumentation, consisting mainly of electronic drones and subtle percussion, serves to enhance the intimacy and intensity of the performances.
