Merchandise - After The End

Review by Vitor Valentim

After The End, the fourth studio album by Merchandise, is a captivating and introspective exploration of the post-punk and shoegaze genres. The album marks a departure from the band's earlier work, with a more polished and refined sound that showcases their evolution as musicians.

From the opening track, "Corridor," the listener is drawn into a world of dreamy guitars and haunting vocals that set the tone for the rest of the album. The standout track, "Enemy," is a brooding and melancholic anthem that showcases lead singer Carson Cox's emotive vocals and the band's ability to create a lush and immersive soundscape.

The album is not without its flaws, however. Some tracks, such as "Life Outside The Mirror," feel repetitive and lack the emotional depth of the rest of the album. However, these missteps are overshadowed by the overall strength of the album as a cohesive work.

Comments

Here is the rundown of my score... And, I quote, [Merchandise] "they've jumped to the front of the pack with a stylish, well-crafted, and yes, enjoyably derivative set." - Timothy Monger - AllMusic.Monger is so right on in his observation. For me, the 80s styling leans too heavily on the bands I least enjoy. The Church, Mission UK... Just not my fashion. Also, if I want to relive that era of British music... Notably, the peak of the 4AD label... I'll pop music in from Wolfgang Press, This Mortal Coil, Modern English and the like. Here's my suggestion: While not necessarily a bad record - It's far from it. Simply, the derivative nature of it is glaring to my ears. I was there in the early years. I recognize the original bands and their workplace. Still, this CD is worthy of a listen if you enjoy smart, British guitar rock. And, true, it does carry with it the shadings of 4AD, which was approximately the hippest label going at one time. Just saying. Your local library, like mine might own a copy to borrow. Hoopla also streams it. Check it out, hipsters. Aloha.
