Review by Marlise Brenol

The String Quartets Volume VIII, featuring Ludwig van Beethoven's No. 13 in B Flat Major Op. 130 and No. 17 in B Flat Major Op. 133 Grosse Fuge, is a remarkable collection of pieces that showcase the Hungarian String Quartet's exceptional musicianship.

The album opens with the No. 13 in B Flat Major Op. 130, a piece that is both elegant and complex, with its intricate melodies and harmonies. The Hungarian String Quartet's performance is nothing short of stunning, with each member bringing their own unique sound and style to the table. The quartet's seamless transitions between movements and the delicate balance between instruments make for a truly captivating listening experience.

The second piece, No. 17 in B Flat Major Op. 133 Grosse Fuge, is a masterpiece in its own right. The quartet's performance of this challenging piece is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The complex rhythms and harmonies are executed with precision and passion, and the quartet's interpretation of the piece is both powerful and nuanced.

Notes

  • Australian WRC 3rd pressing for The Record Society. The LP is housed in the right side of the gatefold, with the sleeve opening inside at the centre. Issued in October 1961, September 1963 and November 1965. Issued in a new dark blue cover, with all the liner notes on the inner and back, instead of having an extra page indise. This one is identifiable as the 3rd pressing by the short-lived 393 number for the Flinders Lane address (as well as the superfluous mono sticker - nothing underneath, so they could have printed it on the sleeve).
  • The Record Society (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., 393 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
  • Australian WRC 1st pressing for The Record Society. The LP is housed in the right side of the gatefold, with the sleeve opening inside at the centre. The back of the gatefold flap is blank, and a two-sided page is affixed to it at the centre. Issued in October 1961, September 1963 and November 1965 - pressing variations (if any) between first and second pressings unknown.
  • The Record Society (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., 330 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
