Review by Gareth Pitt-Nash

Home Cookin Mutiny by Jr Walker & The All Stars is a soulful and energetic album that captures the spirit of Motown in the 1960s. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers, all of which showcase the band's tight musicianship and Jr Walker's distinctive saxophone playing.

The album opens with the upbeat and funky "Shotgun," which quickly establishes the band's groove and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Other standout tracks include "Shake and Fingerpop," a lively dance number with catchy call-and-response vocals, and "Cleo's Mood," a soulful instrumental that highlights Jr Walker's virtuosity on the saxophone.

Throughout the album, Jr Walker & The All Stars demonstrate their versatility and range, moving seamlessly between soul, funk, and R&B. The band's tight arrangements and energetic performances make Home Cookin Mutiny a joy to listen to from start to finish.

Comments

My favorite Jr. Walker album
This is a thesaurus of 1/8th and 16th note phrases for bass guitar. Also it's in Ab and Jamerson manages to make use of the open strings without it sounding dissonant. Miracle worker!
FABULEUX YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the three man All Stars that usually backed Junior Walker but that group couldn't have pulled off this track. This track needed James Jamerson like Junior needed home cooking.
I've recently come across an article dealing with the black diner and non black waiters. Well, Jr. Walker may not have had this in mind, but home cookin' may explain the reason why some black Americans aren't conversant with tipping when eating out. It's due to the outing out hasn't been the cultural experience of all too many black diners. And the ones who were experienced in eating out were confronted with the Jim Crow laws of the time. So home cookin' was the order of the day and may still be even with the lifting of Jim Crow laws. (See the movie starring Whoopie Goldberg and Danny Glover "The Color Purple" for a look into our cultural habit of home cookin'.)
Still in 2020!!!
Tune!!!....love it...
Thanks.
Se puede ser al mismo tiempo relajado y estar en llamas? Si. James lo hizo
Home Groovin! From Blewfoot!
15 people have no soul
Picked up a cookbook yesterday with a recipe for Collard Greens. Not believing my good luck to find Organic Collard Greens here in Vancouver, Canada, I slapped on this Jr. Walker & The All Stars album track on my turntable, and got down to business! MMMMMM. And thanks to you Jr. for puttin' me in the mood to shake and rattle those pans!
Oh Man.
I just noticed that the Home Cookin' album cover features Walker - in a restaurant!!! heh But yeah, man, Jamerson is probably my biggest influence, and he's just a freakin' magnetron on this one!!!
Jr. Walker, they need to do a movie. ASAP
James Lee Jamerson was a be-bop bassist of course, but no doubt about the fact:he was the funkiest bassist in the US.
I could not agree more with the comments. I love my wife's wiggly walk and her baby talk. but my family just stuffed themselves on my chicken and beans and rice and pickles. Funny lyrics. food and funk go together. This is the wonderful craziness that comes from giving James Jamerson three chords and saying "make it funky". Also, let's not forget about the tambourine. How many of us have had to live through a set when they gave somebody a tambourine because they thought "anybody can play it". Oh Lord.
This is a great number !
Some Malt Shops like Johnny Rocketts, Ruby's Diner, Should Have This Jukebox Song ???????
Not just the bass, but the drummer! Love every ingredient!
He still could put them out"
So good !
The lyrics are so funny !!
awesome bass playing by James, but what about the man on the guitar?
OOOOH>>>>>SHIZZY!!!JAMERSON!
Jr Walker I need some home cooking
RIP, dtummer, Jerome Teasley.
James Jamerson absolutely fucking slays with his bassline on this song. what a beast!
Give me Junior's cookin' everyday!
