About Josef Krips conducting The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Austrian conductor. He was born 8 April 1902 in Vienna, Austria and died 13 October 1974 in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied with Felix Weingartner and served as his assistant at the Vienna Volksoper from 1921 until 1924. In 1933 became a resident conductor at the Vienna Volksoper, and a regular conductor at the Vienna State Opera. He fled Austria in 1938 after the Anschluss (his father, although he had converted to catholicisim, was jewish by birth). He moved to Belgrade, but returned to Vienna at the end of the war, and helped rebuild the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. Krips held music directorships with the London Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
