John Cage - Shock

Review by Vinciane Amorini

The album Shock by John Cage is a unique and experimental work of art that challenges traditional notions of music. The pieces on the album are a mix of electronic and acoustic sounds, with Cage using unconventional instruments such as prepared pianos and radios to create his compositions.

Listeners may find the album to be disorienting at first, as it lacks the traditional structure and melody that is typical of most music. However, as one becomes more familiar with Cage's approach, they will begin to appreciate the intricate and nuanced sounds that he creates.

The standout track on the album is undoubtedly "4'33"", which is a performance piece in which the performer sits in silence for four minutes and thirty-three seconds. While some may view this as a gimmick, Cage intended it to be a meditation on the nature of sound and the role of the performer in creating music.

It's only a photograph? I just listened to a recording of 0'00'' on spotify, and at the end of the recording you can hear someone stirring the cup of tea or coffee they have just made, and you realise that the noise you heard for the preceding two minutes was the kettle boiling to make that cup of tea. Made me smile, anyway.
