Review by Fabián Núñez van Pinxteren

Societys Child Baby Ive Been Thinking by Janis Ian is a powerful and thought-provoking album that delves deep into complex social issues. The album features Ian's signature folk-rock sound, coupled with her insightful and poignant lyrics that explore themes of racism, sexism, and social injustice.

The title track, "Societys Child," is a standout on the album, with its honest and raw portrayal of the struggles of interracial relationships. Ian's vocals are emotive and powerful, and the lyrics are both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Other tracks on the album, such as "Janey's Blues" and "New Christ Cardiac Hero," tackle issues of mental illness and societal pressure, respectively. Ian's ability to tackle such heavy subject matter with such grace and sensitivity is truly impressive.

Comments

I am always amazed that these biscuits stay with people over time.
I saw her when she toured with Richie Havens believe it or not. After they did their sets they performed one song together at the end and it was great.
Lyrics
Come to my door, baby
Face is clean and shining black as night
My mother went to answer your note
And you looked so fine
Now I could understand the tears and the shame
She called you boy instead of your name
When she wouldn't let you inside
When she turned and said
"But honey, he's not our kind"
She said I can't see you any more, baby
Can't see you any more
Walk me down to school now baby
Everybody's acting deaf and blind
Until they turn and say
"Why don't you stick to your own kind"
My teachers all laugh, they smirked and they stared
Cutting deep down in our affairs
Preachers of equality
Think they believe it
Then why won't they just let us be?
They say I can't see you any more, baby
Can't see you any more
One of these days I'm gonna stop my listening
Gonna raise my head up high
One of these days I'm gonna raise up
My glistening wings and fly
But that day will have to wait for a while
Cause baby, I'm only society's child
When we're older, things may change
But for now this is the way they must remain
I can't see you any more, baby
I can't see you any more
No, I don't want to see you any more
Baby
I was sitting with a bunch of girls and a painted school bus in the Berkeley hills and 1966 when we listen to this song. Hit me like a ton of bricks! Now it's like a tattoo on my memory, every time I hear it I go right back to that school bus talking with those Junior high girls. Elaine Weldon. My first love, she didn't even know it, when we left in the station wagon I was in the back seat with no more room, and she sat on my lap and I put my arm around her holding her steady. Whenever I hear that song I fall back in love with Elaine Weldon sitting in the backseat of that station wagon all over again.
Artie Butler played the keyboards on this song. Listen to the organ at the very end & you'll realize it's somewhat similar to the later recorded hit "Indian Reservation" by the Raiders, but that's because Butler played organ on both tracks.
Janis Ian was 16 when this song came out. She wrote it when she was 13. She sang this song on The Smothers Brothers Show. It was pretty controversial, but that's how the Smothers Brothers rolled.
Amazing work of art (great music, lyrics, and arrangement) for a 13 year old.
I didn't think there were teenage girls writing songs, singing songs, and playing instruments before Debbie Gibson. Then I discovered this.
I used to play and sing this all the time. Guitar or piano - ??
Then in 1973 The Stories ripped off Janis with the same type of song called Brother Louie. Total ripoff of this song. They reversed it with the boy being white and the girl being black. Society's Child was so much better.
Dios mio esta cancion tan profunda la hizo a los catorce, y yo jugando con mi caquita a esa edad uff
Janis, a Jewish Girl and Leonard Bernstein , Jewish as well. Amazing
She has a heart of GOLD.
I remember when this Song was pulled Off the Radio in the SF Bay Area. I still have the original 45 record.
