Review by ANNIE BORIBOUNE

Charango by Jaime Torres is a mesmerizing album that showcases the virtuosity of the Argentine charango player. The album features a collection of traditional Andean tunes, as well as original compositions by Torres himself. The charango, a small guitar-like instrument made from the shell of an armadillo, is the star of the show, producing a unique sound that is at once percussive and melodic.

The album opens with "La Humahuacasa," a lively tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Torres' playing is precise and energetic, and the rhythm section provides a solid foundation for his improvisations. The title track, "Charango," is a beautiful ballad that showcases the instrument's softer side. Torres' delicate fingerpicking is complemented by the subtle accompaniment of the other musicians.

Throughout the album, Torres demonstrates his mastery of the charango, weaving intricate melodies and rhythms into each track. "El Condor Pasa," a classic Andean tune, is given new life by Torres' arrangement, which includes a haunting flute melody and a driving rhythm section. "Carnavalito" is another highlight, featuring a catchy melody and a joyful energy that is impossible to resist.
