Iron Butterfly - Silly Sally

Review by Achmad Furqon Syaifullah

Iron Butterfly's album "Silly Sally" is a masterpiece that showcases the band's musical prowess and creativity. The album features a unique blend of psychedelic rock and heavy metal, which creates a sound that is both powerful and captivating.

The album's opening track, "Silly Sally," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its catchy guitar riffs and infectious drum beats. The album then continues with tracks like "Butterfly Bleu" and "Stone Believer," which showcase the band's ability to create epic, hard-hitting rock anthems.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Soldier in Our Town," which is a haunting ballad that showcases the band's softer side. The song's melancholic melody and poignant lyrics make it a standout track on the album.

Humm?? I wonder what their taking about?? I did hear that ‘Sally’ may become legal in some states. So perfect for all the new Stoner/ Psyche bands around today.. Everything is a ⭕️ and we’re coming ‘round again! Believe it baby’s.??
This is a billion times worse than 'Scorching Beauty' and 'Sun & Steel'!!!!

Actually, 'Scorching Beauty' and 'Sun & Steel' aren't as bad albums as people make them out to be. Just look at them from the point of view that Iron Butterfly could have metamorphed into that, with their sound evolving in the four years between 'Metamorphosis' and 'Scorching Beauty'.
Muy buena rola ! Pero nada que ver con el estilo Iron Butterfly mas bien parece una cancion de Ides of march o BST !
From what I've read it appears Doug Ingle did rejoin the group not long after this single came out. But then before too long they all broke up without having recorded anything else.
Awesome! Get down!
noise festival.
Still Great !
Do you happen to have the edited 45 single version of "The Time of Our Lives"? If you do have it could you add it? I have not heard it since hearing it on the radio in 1969. thanks, I enjoy your Iron Butterfly channel.
weird to hear the group with a horn section.
Also weird to hear no keyboard. Obviously because Doug Ingle had left, but also wasn't replaced.
This is Pinera he has lost his way from Iron Butterfly
To my knowledge, the deceased members are Erik Braunn, Lee Dorman, Larry Reinhardt (Rhino), Darryl DeLoach and Phillip Kramer.
Title made me think of Sweet Smoke, they also made a song called Silly Sally. If you like Iron Butterfly you should also consider listening to Sweet Smoke. They were also a great psychedelic band in the 60's. The album Just A Poke  is a classic.
Sounds like something off the first Tower of Power album - East Bay Grease. I like it!
it would be funny if they refused to play in the garden of eden on the golden oldie tours
Can't stop replaying
@PsychedelicTeen I'm arriving late to this discussion , but , I have'nt heard anything about Doug Ingle being deceased. I can look it up. Erik Braunn , of course , passed away a few years ago , maybe that was the cause of some confusion ? Or , maybe someone said that , because Doug has'nt worked with the group for so many years . I met him in '96 , super nice guy.
6-15-2011. Ain't it fine? Lee Dorman is 69. Happy Birthday, Lee. You all were one of the greatest bands of all time.
damn, i was expecting, or hoping for a sweet smoke cover
@PsychedelicTeen Okay I should clarify that comment a bit more. Free was the only song that used horns in the same funky way that Silly Sally did. But the song I'm Right, I'm Wrong (from Sun and Steel) had very limited use of horns and even then they were used very differently in contrast to this song. Oh and the song Beyond the Milky Way has a sax solo. I hope that helps! Thanks for the interest!
No! This is NOT the IB I knew and loved! It's too influenced by Blues Image (Ride, Captain Ride!") and Cactus (both fronted by titanic ego Mike Pinera. It has NO presence of the heart of the group, it's "vital" organist, Doug Ingle! It simply IS a "silly" song - possibly a throwaway Pinera had sitting under a stashbox!
are there anymore songs after this or what I mean is is there anymore songs with horns? Did they ever play this song live? I need to know more. I have always loved these guys. Lee Dorman has always and will be a big infuence to me as abass player as Geezer Butler is too. Both hand in ahnd these guys can and will always show me . Andwhat real bass players can do, not excluding Flea and Billy Sheehan. No disrespect on any others, just so you all know!!
@cristoBaLwa1
As far as I know the lineup on this song did not record any other songs with horns. This song was recorded in early-mid 1971 which was right before they broke up. That being said they probably didn't last long enough to play this song live. Now in 1975 the Erik Braunn led Iron Butterfly recorded a song called Free (for their Sun and Steel album) that also had horns. So I'm pretty sure Silly Sally and Free are the only song IB recorded with horns. I'll have to check now.
I literally have not heard this song in 40 years. Have searched for a copy since hearing it ONCE on the radio in 1971. Thanx for posting it!

I missed them in Roanoke Va Fall of '70-tour in support of METAMORFOSIS. I DID see them early the next year in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech(VPI). My Aunt invited me to come , see the show and stay at their house afterwards. The opening act, Black Oak Arkansas, had their first album produced by Mike Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Rhinhardt-the 2 guitarists with Iron Butterfly at that time. It is one of my fondest concert memories, growing up during that golden age of great rock music. If I recall, Ron Bushy, IB drummer, was sick-he was covered that night by the drummer for Mother's Milk. Mike Pinera later joined them briefly before co-founding Ramatam with April Lawton and Mitch Mitchell. METAMORFOSIS is one of the great "under the radar" albums of the early 70s.
Most outstanding band back in the day, awsome all the way around.....xoxo LoLa xoxo
Saw Mike Pinera 'out-shred' Ted Nugent back in 71 (I think)
