The Hollywood Persuaders - Tijuana

Review by David Bovain

The album Tijuana by Hollywood Persuaders is a fantastic collection of instrumental tracks that transport the listener to the sun-drenched streets of Mexico. The band's signature surf rock sound is infused with Latin rhythms and mariachi-style brass, creating a unique and vibrant musical experience.

The album opens with the title track "Tijuana," which sets the tone for the rest of the album with its upbeat tempo and catchy guitar riffs. Other standout tracks include "Gringo," which features a playful trumpet melody, and "El Matador," a slower, more melancholic tune that showcases the band's versatility.

About The Hollywood Persuaders

The Persuaders were really one key figure. That of , whose engineering skills had led him to build PAL Studio in Cucamonga, initially at 8020 Archibald Avenue and then at 8040 - where it eventually became 's 'Studio Z' in 1964. Buff offered flat-rate fee tariffs to up-and-coming bands who needed cost-effective recordings. He engineered a number of surf bands (despite being in the desert location) and his work launched The Surfaris and The Chantays, but he benefited no more than they by some devious re-recording of the works. As Zappa (who had lived nearby with his first wife) began to occupy the studio, a number of other musicians began to regularly appear. Dave Aerni, Ronnie Williams and various personnel from Zappa's early groups. Buff created a number of 'labels' and pressed limited quantities of projects on them. A few San Bernardino stores would carry them and Buff then got local DJs to air-play them. When the radio station did their weekly sales-check with the stores they would discover stock had almost gone. That's because the studio team had anonymously purchased them all - and the station would chart the disc, at least into the top forty. Buff & co would then go to Hollywood and 'persuade' A&R music men to advance them large sums for national release of the 'hit'. Hence "The Hollywood Persuaders". Some of the Buff 'scams' did actually chart. "Tijuana Surf" was #1 in the charts (above The Beatles) in 1964 (with Zappa's "Grunion Run" on the flipside). Buff's "Drums-A-Go-Go" was covered by Sandy Nelson and his original made its way into the soundtrack of "Natural-Born Killers"

The jingle is taken from the PAMS Jingle company's "Sonovox"series. Its title is "The Sonowaltz" and the KXOK call letters were probably added at PAMS.

WOW! I've been wanting to hear this particular jingle since--1963! Thanks!
Frank Zappa was involved in this song and the group.
What's the original source of music for the second song?
@mutleybird I don't know the source for the music they used for their radio jungle. It may have been somehting they had recorded locally for their jingle. When I run across the album I will check and see if there is any details regarding that.
Awesome! Is "Grunion Run" included as well?

Anyway the jingle sounds by Paul Buff himself (the man behind The Hollywood Presuaders)
This was soooo GREAT!!! I love records like this. Thanks so much MaynardCat!! Put a smile on my face this morning. :-)
Very nice...

was fuzz a normal thing back then?
When I worked at the State Hospital in Elgin,Illinois a patient had a box of old 45’s that he was selling. He had this in mint shape. Bought it for a quarter! This was in the late’80’s. 15 years later I sold it to a Zappa fanatic for a lot of money. Great music
This IZ the BESTEST mix of Zappa's Grunion Run! Burning raw compressed mit distortion! Take care of that 45! Itz priceless!!!
I remember going out to the beach at night to see the grunion run, but mostly I remember the chips of sparkling shiny metal from the oil rigs. <3
Even at such an early point in his career you can still tell it’s Frank on geetar! You can hear the Johnny “Guitar” Watson influence most strongly.
unmistakeable Frank guitar.
"Grunion are two fish species of the genus Leuresthes: the California grunion, L. tenuis, and the Gulf grunion, L. sardinas. .... Many people enjoy catching grunion at events called 'grunion runs'." (wikipedia)
"How's your grunion?" I think was used on the Donna 45 single "How's Your Bird?" (Baby Ray and The Ferns), released later.
Frank's very first hit in 1963 that listed nummer 1 for 17 weeks on the Mexican hit lists (source: Frank Zappa biography)
Did he write the horn charts, does anyone know?
