Review by Eugene Boyle

The album Concerto No 1 in e flat Major for Piano and Orchestra by Franz Liszt, Claudio Arrau, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy is a true masterpiece in the world of classical music. The performance by Claudio Arrau on the piano is exceptional, showcasing his technical skills and musicality. The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the baton of Eugene Ormandy, provides a flawless accompaniment, highlighting the nuances of Liszt's score.

The concerto is divided into four movements, each one a unique expression of Liszt's musical genius. The first movement, Allegro maestoso, is grand and majestic, with the piano and orchestra engaging in a dramatic dialogue. The second movement, Quasi adagio, is more introspective, with the piano taking on a lyrical quality. The third movement, Allegretto vivace - Allegro animato, is a playful and energetic scherzo, with the piano and orchestra engaging in a lively exchange. The final movement, Allegro marziale animato, is a triumphant finale, with the piano and orchestra engaging in a virtuosic display of musical fireworks.

Born: October 22, 1811, Doborján, Austria-Hungary (present-day Raiding, Austria). Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, organist, philanthropist, author, nationalist and a Franciscan tertiary. He was a renowned performer throughout Europe, noted especially for his showmanship and great skill with the piano. To this day, he is considered by some to have been the greatest pianist in history. Liszt's musical invention went into territories which were then almost unexplored, in particular as regards harmonic research, as emerges from the late piano works, which led him to anticipate fragments of harmonies from the early twentieth century. His preference for program music is testified by the numerous symphonic poems he composed. Father-in-law to .
