Review by Nicole Toscano

Frank Zappa’s album Joes Domage is a unique and captivating collection of live recordings from his early years as a musician. Released in 2004, this album showcases Zappa’s impressive guitar skills and experimental sound, as well as his ability to improvise and push musical boundaries.

The album features recordings from various live performances in 1964 and 1965, including tracks from the Whisky A-Go-Go in Los Angeles and the Broadside Club in New York City. The songs range from bluesy rock numbers like “Mudshark” and “How Could I Be Such A Fool” to jazzy instrumentals like “Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance” and “The Idiot Bastard Son”.

Zappa’s band at the time, The Mothers of Invention, were known for their unconventional approach to music and their willingness to experiment with different styles and techniques. This is evident throughout Joes Domage, with tracks like “Oh No” featuring wild guitar solos and intricate time signatures.

Comments

I should start by saying that I really like the other volumes of the "Joe's" series (menage, corsage, etc.) and I am quite fond of the wazoo-era band. That (now) being said, this is probably my least favorite Zappa release. Even such oft-maligned titles as Playground Psychotics have great spans of interesting high-quality music - and you can skip (uncheck or what have you) the talking and interviews if you are so inclined. This title, however, is pure inside baseball - if you want to know what it was like to sit through a Zappa learning session, then this is the title for you. If, however, you want to just hear some music it is nigh on unlistenable - by the 15th minute of "Frog Song" you are pleading for some blessed relief. Quel dommage indead.
