Devourment - Shallow Grave

Review by Leanne Bryson

Shallow Grave, the 2019 album by American death metal band Devourment, is a ferocious and unrelenting assault on the senses. From the very first track, "A Virulent Strain of Retaliation," the listener is plunged headfirst into a world of crushing riffs, thunderous drumming, and guttural vocals that sound like they're being torn from the depths of hell itself.

Throughout the album's ten tracks, Devourment never let up on the intensity, delivering one punishing song after another. "Narcissistic Paraphilia" is a standout track, with its chugging guitars and relentless blast beats, while "Arterial Spray Patterns" is a brutal and unrelenting assault on the ears.

Despite the sheer brutality of the music, there is a sense of precision and control to Devourment's playing that sets them apart from other death metal bands. The musicianship on display here is truly impressive, with each member of the band working in perfect harmony to create a sound that is both punishing and precise.

Comments

I can handle OSDM when done right but this is legit boring and recorded horribly
Wow this completely shits on the US Devourment, man what a shit band that one is.
This is awful.

Listen to slam, listen to the REAL Devourment.
@clownhunter5

Obviously you know nothing of death metal's origins and just started listening to metal within the last decade. Devourment (US) is about 100x farther removed from death metal than this band.
still shit but better
This is a'ight, totally pointless and kinda boring though. I like the garbage production, at first I thought this was legit straight from the basement of some 90s Swedish kids moms house. But even for OSDM this is nothing special. Apparently they have trouble writing new songs because "Too Late" is on all 3 of their releases. The fact that this came out in 2007 and they haven't brought anything new to the table is kinda disappointing. I'd much rather listen to the US Devourment - the one that's already made a name for itself. I give these guys props for keeping it old school, but old school doesn't mean better by any stretch. Faaaaaaaaar from original. At this point the OSDM fad has really worn itself out. These guys just seem to be hopping on the bandwagon.
Just to clarify as the comments below are conflicted: This is the Swedish DEVOURMENT & this IS a rehearsal recording from 1990, ex CARNAGE & Johan who would go on to FURBOWL / ARCHENEMY / ETC . 28years ago - I know, I still have it on a tape from back then.
So to moan on about how crap this is compared to the current Yank band of the same name is pointless. To also moan about only 4 songs existed - well they only lasted from 1990 - 91.
