Review by Charmaine Mills

Brubeck Plays Brubeck is a classic jazz album by the legendary American pianist and composer, Dave Brubeck. Released in 1956, the album features Brubeck's own compositions performed by his quartet, which includes Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Bob Bates on bass, and Joe Dodge on drums.

The album opens with "Bossa Nova USA," a lively and rhythmic tune that showcases Brubeck's innovative use of time signatures. The quartet's seamless interplay and Desmond's melodic saxophone solos make this track a standout.

Another highlight is "The Duke," a tribute to Duke Ellington that features Brubeck's elegant piano playing and Desmond's soulful saxophone. The quartet's rendition of "In Your Own Sweet Way," one of Brubeck's most beloved compositions, is also a standout, featuring a beautiful melody and tasteful solos by all members of the quartet.

Summary by Charmaine Mills

Brubeck Plays Brubeck is a masterful display of Brubeck's compositional and pianistic skills, as well as the quartet's tight musicianship. The album remains a timeless classic in the jazz canon and is a must-have for any jazz fan.

Comments

This relatively early work by Brubeck is at once the most original and representative recording of his entire career. Playing solo piano, Brubeck performs the themes, then provides whole and complete improvisations on them--beginning with songs that became "hits," like"The Duke" and "In Your Own Sweet Way." But he goes on to show his indebtedness to Bach on the fugue-like "Two Part Contention" and to the stride piano style of Fats Waller on the nostalgic "One Moment Worth Years." Arguably the most important solo piano album since its appearance, "Brubeck Plays Brubeck" immediately attracted the attention of publishers and pianists, for whom the notated transcriptions are as satisfying to memorize and play as the album was upon first hearing it. The songs remain in print, which is only fitting for an album that has become a timeless treasure for musicians of every style. (I'm fully aware of the popularity of the "Time Out" transcriptions, which fall into the category of "fake sheets" for jazz musicians who require no more than melody and chord symbols. "Brubeck Plays Brubeck" is unique in that it's more like a finished collection of pieces by Bach or Chopin, providing the musician with an opportunity to engage with the creative intelligence of one of American music's most brilliant minds.)
Son Chris recounts this is an early Brubek composition, written for his wife on his return from the war...
I first heard this in the 1960s, and was gob-smacked by Brubeck's playing....I became an instant fan of his right through to his death in the 2010s...
In your eyes
first song i ever heard him do altho a different version. love you madly, Dave.
Beautiful tune....
RIP, Dave...

A little bit slower than the 1955 recording with the quartet, but a great piece solo. Duke Ellington must have loved this song from Brubeck.
In this short piece, Brubeck manages to play through ALL twelve keys.  Honest.
Great! In my opinion that's more attractive than the recording with the quartet...
That pedal point at 1:35!!!!!
My favorite Brubeck piece.
