Chick Corea - The Mad Hatter

Review by Charles Slang

The Mad Hatter by Chick Corea is a captivating album that showcases the pianist's virtuosity and creativity. Released in 1978, the album features Corea's signature fusion style, blending jazz, rock, and classical elements into a unique and dynamic sound.

The album opens with "The Woods," a haunting and atmospheric piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. From there, Corea and his band explore a range of styles and moods, from the energetic and funky "Mad Hatter Rhapsody" to the introspective and contemplative "Litha."

Throughout the album, Corea's piano playing is nothing short of masterful, displaying his technical prowess and his ability to improvise with ease. His bandmates, including saxophonist Joe Farrell and drummer Steve Gadd, also shine, contributing their own unique voices to the music.

The Mad Hatter is a must-listen for any fan of jazz or fusion music. With its inventive compositions, virtuosic performances, and dynamic energy, it remains a classic album that stands the test of time.

Comments

I'm going to keep this short and to the point. In my opinion this is a highly overlooked gem. Chick assembled an amazing cast for this album with Steve Gadd on drums, Eddie Gomez on upright bass, and Joe Farrell on tenor sax and flute. The core group is augmented by a small orchestra and the vocals that appear on a few tracks are by Corea's wife Gayle Morgan. Herbie Hancock joins Corea on the last track playing Rhodes and synth. I think the all music review and 2 and a half star rating is really unfair so hopefully what I've wrote will inspire you to check out The Mad Hatter for yourself. I'll admit whole heartedly that sections of this album are dated like the lead off tune "The Woods" where Chick attempts to create the sounds of the woods using the synths of the time. I wouldn't have led off with a piece like that cuz I'm sure many listeners had a tough time getting past that first track but once you get past it the music improves drastically peaking first with Chick's blazing post bop barn burner "Humpty Dumpty" that features just the quartet of Eddie Gomez on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and Chick on acoustic piano. For me this is the best tune on the album. Joe Farrell and Eddie Gomez are killing it! The last three tracks are also top self tunes especially "Dear Alice" which has a great solo intro by Eddie Gomez who's just eating his acoustic bass for breakfast with great chops and musicality. Chick is in top form throughout in my opinion the 70s were a peak time for Corea artistically. Check out this album I guarantee if you're a music lover you'll appreciate it and perhaps you may love it like me.
