Carla Bley's self-titled album is a unique and eclectic collection of jazz compositions that showcase her versatility as a composer and pianist. The album features a diverse group of musicians, including saxophonist Steve Slagle, trumpeter Michael Mantler, and bassist Steve Swallow, among others.
The tracks on the album range from the upbeat and energetic "Reactionary Tango" to the introspective and melancholic "Ad Infinitum." Bley's compositions are complex and nuanced, incorporating elements of free jazz, avant-garde, and classical music.
One standout track is "Walking Batteriewoman," which features an intricate, driving rhythm section and a memorable saxophone melody. Another highlight is the hauntingly beautiful "Ida Lupino," which showcases Bley's skill as a pianist and composer.
