Review by Kelly Van Sant

The album Serenade For Tenor Horn Strings Our Hunting Fathers Folksong Arrangements by Britten, Robert Tear, Alan Civil, Elisabeth Söderström, Neville Marriner, and Richard Armstrong is a beautiful collection of British folksongs arranged for tenor horn and strings. The album features the stunning vocals of Elisabeth Söderström, accompanied by the rich and expressive playing of tenor horn player Robert Tear, and the skillful string arrangements of Alan Civil, Neville Marriner, and Richard Armstrong.

The album opens with the haunting "Lord! I Married Me A Wife," a traditional folk song arranged by Benjamin Britten. Söderström's voice is both powerful and emotive, perfectly capturing the melancholic mood of the song. Tear's playing is equally impressive, adding depth and texture to the arrangement.

Other standout tracks on the album include "The Foggy, Foggy Dew," arranged by Alan Civil, and "The Plough Boy," arranged by Neville Marriner. Both songs showcase the versatility of Söderström's voice, as well as the skill and sensitivity of the accompanying musicians.

About Britten, Robert Tear, Alan Civil, Elisabeth Söderström, Neville Marriner, Richard Armstrong

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
