Review by Steve Ukena

Undercurrent, the 1962 album by jazz pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall, is a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate listeners nearly 60 years after its release. The album features a series of intimate duets that showcase the incredible musical chemistry between Evans and Hall, both of whom were at the height of their creative powers at the time of recording.

The album opens with "My Funny Valentine," a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the classic Rodgers and Hart tune that perfectly sets the tone for what's to come. Throughout the album, Evans and Hall effortlessly weave in and out of each other's musical lines, creating a seamless and deeply moving musical conversation.

Other standout tracks include "I've Got You Under My Skin," which features a stunning solo from Hall, and "Dream Gypsy," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that highlights Evans' exceptional piano skills. The album also includes several original compositions by both Evans and Hall, including the hauntingly beautiful "Romain."

Phenomenal. The two just dovetail a call & response, with no compromise.
Both are well known for their distinctive styles which mesh seamlessly it easy to think this was instinctive but I suspect they knew each others styles inside out before they got together. Both playing at the top of their game. Simply incredible.
What an absolutely beautiful collaboration. A conversation between two greats, both listening to each other with great care.
