Zespół instrumentalny Big Beat Sextet powstał latem 1962 r. w Warszawie z inicjatywy gitarzystów: Krzysztofa Bańkowskiego i Bohdana Kendelewicza, do których dołączyli: Krzysztof Zagrodzki - gitara basowa; Mariusz Mroczkowski - pianino; Adam Chyła - saksofon oraz Mirosław Bednarski - perkusja. Wkrótce Big Beat Sextet, którego liderem został M. Mroczkowski, zaczął występować na stołecznych wieczorach tanecznych i koncertach. Po jednym z nich grupie zaproponowano występy w klubie "Stodoła".
Premierowe nagrania płytowe zespołu z grudnia 1962 r. okazały się być opracowanymi pez grupę wersjami zachodnich przebojów instrumentalnych. Wiosną 1963 r. formacja nagrała dla radia utwory wokalno-instrumentalne, a rolę wokalisty pełnił M. Mroczkowski.
Wkrótce do wojska odszedł lider, a nowym basistą grupy został Zbigniew Antoszewski. W takim składzie kwintet Big Beat Sextet trafił latem do Szczecina, gdzie dał swe ostatnie koncerty, przekształcając się w Tajfuny.
