Review by Asha Dornfest

The Bartok Symphony Orchestra of the Southwest German Radio, Baden Baden, led by Rolf Reinhardt, has delivered a stunning performance of Bartok's The Miraculous Mandarin and The Wooden Prince. The album captures the vivid colors and intensity of these two ballets, which showcase Bartok's unique blend of folk music and modernist techniques.

The Miraculous Mandarin, with its dark and violent story of a prostitute and three thugs, is brought to life with powerful orchestration and dramatic contrasts. The orchestra's precision and energy create a sense of urgency and danger that is both thrilling and unsettling.

The Wooden Prince, on the other hand, is a more poetic and whimsical work, telling the story of a prince who falls in love with a wooden princess. The orchestra's delicate handling of the score's intricate textures and fairy-tale atmosphere is enchanting, and Reinhardt's interpretation captures the work's playful spirit and emotional depth.

Born: 1881-03-25 (Nagyszentmiklós, Magyar Királyság). Died: September 26, 1945 (New York, New York, United States). Béla Viktor János Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, ethnomusicologist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music (born 25/03/1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, today Sânnicolau Mare, Romania - died 25/09/1945 in New York, U.S.A). He is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century; his vast production reveals a daring and restless harmonic instinct that is affected by his passionate studies on Hungarian folk songs. Typical elements of Béla Bartók style (derived from Hungarian, Transylvanian and Romanian folklore) consists in the use of irregular rhythms and a clear preference for obsessive rhythms. His compositions have sonorities, sometimes abstract, but often harsh, rough and barbaric. Married to the pianist . His 2nd son, became a recording engineer.
