Review by Paul Morrissey

The album Dallas Arts Jazz 1988 by Arts Magnet High School is a fantastic collection of jazz tunes that showcases the incredible talent of the school's young musicians. The album features a variety of classic jazz standards, as well as original compositions that demonstrate the students' creativity and skill.

The musicianship on display is truly impressive, with each member of the ensemble delivering confident and polished performances. The arrangements are tight and well-executed, with the band displaying a great sense of dynamics and sensitivity to each other's playing.

One standout track is "Take the A Train," which features a lively and energetic performance from the entire band. The soloists are particularly impressive, with each player bringing their own unique style and flair to their improvisations.

Notes

  • "Arts Jazz 88" is the ninth recording produced by the Arts Magnet High School at Booker T. Washington Music Department but is still a first in many ways.
  • All of the charts recorded on this album were first takes with no overdubs or sweetening with the exception of the vocals. For the first time we recorded the instrumental music at the Arts Magnet school because the Leadership Dallas Class of '88 donated enough funding to buy our own recording equipment. Because of their support we are now "in house" and able to produce not only albums like this, but audition tapes of the highest quality for all music students in our program. For the first time Mr. Luis Martinez recorded and engineered our instrumental recordings and continues to give his knowledge to school projects be on the call. For the first time one school in North America (Arts Magnet) won eight categories in the prestigious eleven year old downbeat magazine DeeBee Awards. For the first time our school, Arts, won two gold medals, one silver medal, $5,000 in offered scholarships to the Berklee College of Music, and four All-Star awards at the Second Annual Musicfest U.S.A. Finally, this album marks the first time in four years that Roy Hargrove will not return to the Arts Magnet in the fall. Roy exemplifies what can be accomplished by a talented individual in a specialize curriculum with discipline and dedication.
  • On a personal note, the past four years knowing and working with Roy have been a once in a lifetime experience as a teacher. As an artist, the warmth of his sound and depth of his music will last this director the rest of his life. "Thank You" Roy, not only for your original music, arrangements and commitment to the great art form of jazz, but for keeping your word, and never letting the international festivals, Blue Note recording dates or any of the amazing event that came your way, keep you from your original promise of, "Arts Magnet High School first".
