Review by Anil Atluri

The album String Quartets by Arne Nordheim, Antonio Bibalo, Norwegian String Quartet is a must-have for classical music lovers. The quartet's seamless blend of Arne Nordheim and Antonio Bibalo's compositions is a testament to their musical prowess. The album features seven tracks, each with its unique flavor, yet all tied together by the quartet's impeccable musicianship.

The album's opening track, "Ritornello," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The quartet's interpretation of Nordheim's "Partita Ritmica" is a highlight; the quartet's technical skill is on full display as they navigate the complex rhythms and harmonies of the piece. Bibalo's "String Quartet No. 2" is a stark contrast to Nordheim's work, but the quartet handles it with equal grace and precision.

The quartet's ability to seamlessly transition between compositions is impressive, and their musical chemistry is evident throughout the album. The quartet's interpretation of Bibalo's "String Quartet No. 3" is a standout, with each member contributing to the piece's intricate texture.

About Arne Nordheim, Antonio Bibalo, Norwegian String Quartet

Arne Nordheim (born in Larvik, Norway, 20 June 1931 - died 5th June 2010) was a Norwegian composer. He started out as an organ and theory student at the Oslo Conservatory (194852), but later turned to composition, studying with Karl Andersen, Bjarne Brustad, Conrad Baden and Holmboe. He also studied musique concrète in Paris (1955) and electronic music in Bilthoven (1959). Nordheim was one of Norways first composers to turn towards postwar modernism, and he is among the most internationally recognized. He has played a key role in Norwegian musical life as a member of a number of organizing committees and councils. Nordheim gradually established a position as Norways national composer since 1982 living in Grotten, the honorary residence of the Norwegian state. This role has led to celebratory works, such as music for the opening of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. For the same event he composed Draumkvedet, based on a medieval Norwegian epic poem, while to mark the millennium of the city of Trondheim in 1997.
